Balancing Sports & Academics for Student-Athletes

Anyone who follows youth trends knows how much student-athletes have on their plates as they try to balance school, social lives, sports, and sometimes, a part-time job. They often face challenges of managing time commitments, study requirements and grueling workouts. Many young athletes thrive in this high-pressure environment, but others need support and resources to balance it effectively.

This past academic year marked a record high: 8.6 million high school students participated in sports, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations. That number depicts an increase of over 200,000 students in 2024-2025, and a continuing upward trajectory. While the number of students involved in some form of after-school sports or clubs continues to climb, so too do the stressors of balancing it all for these young people.

Let’s explore what this involvement means for student-athletes and offer practical tips for balancing sports participation with academic performance.

By the Numbers: Impact of Sports on Academics

Study after study shows that students who participate in sports throughout their high school career gain health, educational, and mental/social benefits, including better academic outcomes, higher test scores, lower dropout rates, and a higher likelihood of pursuing a post-high school degree.

According to the National Library of Medicine, which conducted a statistical analysis comparing athletes and non-athletes, athletes scored significantly higher on all standardized tests. Athletes were also at lower risk of dropout than non-athletes and had fewer disciplinary actions than their non-athletic peers. The results of their study support the research findings of others that participation in school sports is positively correlated with better academic and behavioral performance among athletes compared to non-athletes.

How is this possible when student-athletes find themselves juggling homework, projects, AP classes, while also taking part in multiple sports, workouts, team dinners and all the other components of being part of an athletic team? The answer is multi-fold, including practicing time management, taking advantage of school and athletic resources, and keeping the lines of communication open between home, school and coaches.

Key Strategies for Managing Sports & School

The pursuit of excellence both on the field and in the classroom can be a daunting task, but some of the most involved athletes find that “doing it all” doesn’t need to come at the expense of mental health, grades or poor athletic performance. The key is in balance or priorities, time management and ongoing communication between competing factors.

Time Management

Most athletes who successfully balance their love of sport and the rigors of school report that time management is one of the most critical components of making their busy lives work. They claim that creating a schedule that not only includes workouts, games, and tournaments, but also scheduled time for studying and working on projects, is a cornerstone of avoiding the overcommitment paradigm.

Part of time management should also be carving out downtime and time to socialize with friends so that sports and school do not become the only parts of a student-athlete’s life. Staying organized with due dates and exam dates in a physical or digital planner can be a lifesaver.

Leveraging Resources

Student-athletes who live busy lives know how to tap into the resources at their fingertips, including after-school teacher help, study sessions, tutors, and guidance counselors with a wealth of experience working with students who balance academics and sports.

On the athletic side, coaches, athletic trainers and athletic directors often have resources at their disposal too to help improve play, training and performance as well as a wealth of resources to teach young athletes how to juggle their schedules successfully.

Prioritizing Mental Health

Studying and playing can’t be the only things in an athlete’s life. Maintaining good sleep, proper hydration, a balanced diet and managing anxiety and stress should be prioritized. Overworking and neglecting mental health can lead to burnout
